Double the IEP Outcomes of Students with ASD.

Most of the research conducted by our group involves ways to improve special education outcomes in the areas of social, communication, and learning skills of students with ASD. Rather than working directly with students, we involve the people who have the most frequent interaction – parents and teachers in the goal setting, intervention planning, and implementation. The resulting COMPASS intervention plans are proven to result in better IEP outcomes compared to special education outcomes in general. Proven in three randomized controlled trials COMPASS doubles the IEP success of students with ASD.

COMPASS for Life

Another unique feature of our work is our process for ensuring that intervention plans are based on the “right” and most leveraged goal for the student. Learn how to double your student’s IEP outcomes by following four easy steps:

Step one: Create a COMPASS profile for your student.

Step two: Using the registration link, invite parents/caregivers to complete their portion of the COMPASS profile.

Step three:

Once personalized goals that will have impacts on other areas of development are identified, we consider how the student’s strengths that come from personal and environmental sources are used in the intervention plan and how challenges that also come from personal and environmental sources are overcome.

Step four:

After the profile is complete, the ratings are merged into a single COMPASS profile/joint summary report that can be shared and discussed with the student’s team for goal setting, planning, and intervention implementation.

BREATHE-EASE: Reducing Special Educator Teacher Burnout and Attrition.

Another line of research involves the study of factors that have an indirect but significant impact on students and how they respond to their special education program. We learned that teachers who experience stress and burnout perform better when they receive COMPASS. With funding from the Institution of Education Sciences, we are adapting and testing a special education teacher burnout prevention and intervention program called BREATHE-EASE. We are in our final year of testing BREATHE-EASE in a randomized controlled trial.
